Say hello to your friends...

I got reminded by the recent 'Where are they now' take on the Babysitters Club girls in Flavorpill of this movie! I loved it so much when I was kid - I always wanted to be Dawn (who I was the complete opposite of) and in reality I was much more of a Mary-Anne. I'm embarrassed to say I read up to about 100 of these books when I was younger and especially loved the repetitive introduction chapter in every book of what the characters where like and what they were wearing. Though I was always confused by the chronology of the books and how they never got any older - and I was always a terrible babysitter.

Also fans should also check out What Claudia Wore - an amazing blog dedicated to BSC style maven Claudia Kishi.

Your arms around me seemed to be the only good thing that ever happened to me

This video makes me want to wear Morrisey shirts and buy a tambourine.

The Drum's EP/mini-album was definitely one of my faves of last year.

I also love this one as well. Jerk is possibly my favourite diss - see also here.

Twenty-Three

Twenty-three
When he was 23 and beautiful
He liked to hang around
With other beautiful people.

He liked to get intoxicated with them,
Have sex with them, make money
With them. Among them,

He found, one did not have to strain.
Other people
Wanted to hang around with them

And came bearing gifts,
A little something. (These
Gift-bearers were a lot like

Politics itself is, “Showbiz
For ugly people.”) In this world
If anything went wrong there

Was always enough money around
To cover it. After he was through
With this crowd he started hanging

Out with a bunch of academic
Gangsters. These were
A different crew altogether:

Smart, on the main, but mean
And eaten alive by resentment.
They never had enough money

And were bitter beyond belief,
Compared, say,
To a troupe of electricians.

Freud said somewhere
In our unconscious
We are always 23.

-Liam Rector

I am a bit obsessed with my (and everyone elses) twenties especially as I've begun my slow but sure decline out of my twenties toward my thirties.

I also loved being 23. It was my favourite year of my twenties (so far) to be sure and it seems like I'm not the only one.

PS here's another

There are some worries!

This is my favourite scene from one of my new fave TV shows called Community. 'There are some worries' (not no worries, cause there are some) is the greatest line in a TV show since 'thats a dealbreaker ladies'

It also stars the former 30 Rock writer, rapper and actor Donald Glover - cop his mixtape I AM JUST A RAPPER here

There is so much dopeness crammed into this show sometimes its too much for me.

This was once a love poem,

This was once a love poem,
before its haunches thickened, its breath grew short,
before it found itself sitting,
perplexed and a little embarrassed,
on the fender of a parked car,
while many people passed by without turning their heads.

It remembers itself dressing as if for a great engagement.
It remembers choosing these shoes,
this scarf or tie.

Once, it drank beer for breakfast,
drifted its feet
in a river side by side with the feet of another.

Once it pretended shyness, then grew truly shy,
dropping its head so the hair would fall forward,
so the eyes would not be seen.

It spoke with passion of history, of art.
It was lovely then, this poem.
Under its chin, no fold of skin softened.
Behind the knees, no pad of yellow fat.
What it knew in the morning it still believed at nightfall.
An unconjured confidence lifted its eyebrows, its cheeks.

The longing has not diminished.
Still it understands. It is time to consider a cat,
the cultivation of African violets or flowering cactus.

Yes, it decides:
Many miniature cacti, in blue and red painted pots.
When it finds itself disquieted
by the pure and unfamiliar silence of its new life,
it will touch them—one, then another—
with a single finger outstretched like a tiny flame.

- This Was Once A Love Poem, Jane Hirshfield

For those of you falling in love

Tom Verlaine and Patti Smith

Johnny Depp and Winona Ryder (again, sorry, I'm obsessed)

Monica Vitti and Jean Paul Belmondo

I can't vouch that all these couples fell in love - but they probably all should have.

Best Movies You've Never Seen #2

Following (1998) - dir. Christopher Nolan

Touches of new-noir(?) and memento (of course) are here but less extreme which is kinda nice and less of the mess-with-your-head type thing which makes for more relaxed weekend viewing. I really do love how short it is too - barely 70 minutes - thats what I call good editing and respect for your audiences time.

I really dig on some Nolan's stuff (Batman Begins, Dark Night and Memento) but I kinda think the rest of his stuff is overrated (Insomnia and the Prestige - but lots of people disagree with me on these two). I do like how even his action films have a lot to do with paranoia and how your own mind can mess with you.

Also excited about inception support starring the talented Joseph Gordon Levitt - will be a good one to wash the awful taste of (500) Days of Summer out of my mouth.

That's cool. Did you blow him away or somethin'?

My favourite scene(s) from Ferris Bueller's Day Off and a perfect example how a minor character can completely upstage the leads - Charlie Sheen embodies so many cliched female fantasies in this scene (besides being a total babe) he is semi-dangerous, articulate, mysterious and actually interested in Jeanie's problems.

Don't get me wrong I totally love this entire movie (big John Hughes fan from way back) - Sloane's fashion sense, Cameron's dads house and Matthew Broderick's dance moves.

Wow.

I really gotta watch this film again.

Meanwhile I had Oprah chillin in the projects

Jay hearts Damien Hirst skulls (and Interpol) in one of the best songs off the new album - love it soooo much!

PS "Come here let me coat you" - is one of my favourite rap lyrics in ages. Genius!

Voy a Explotar (I'm Gonna Explode)

Jesus Christ - this trailer totally killed me. There have been a lot of bad trailers around recently - must memorable for me is Forgetting Sarah Marshall which I loved and the trailer made it look so bad! I found the whole thing quite upsetting. Bad trailers lead to people seeing movies alone people cause no one who wants to go see something with a crappy looking trailer (except me of course).

There is an art to the trailer AKA theres more reaons than Meryl Streep x Alec Baldwin that everyone wants to see Its Complicated.

Anyway this film looks amazing exec produced by Diego Luna and Geal Garcia Bernal can't be a bad sign (**lalala Rudo Y Cursi never happened lalala**) and all the touches of french new wave meets mexican hotness and the use of an Interpol song that doesn't make me wanna revisit breakfast? Exciting - but is this too late in the day for MIFF or ACMI? Should I be looking to Video Dogs/Criterion once more? Le sigh.

Now I am quietly waiting

Now I am quietly waiting for
the catastrophe of my personality
to seem beautiful again,
and interesting, and modern.

The country is grey and
brown and white in trees,
snows and skies of laughter
always diminishing, less funny
not just darker, not just grey.

It may be the coldest day of
the year, what does he think of
that? I mean, what do I? And if I do,
perhaps I am myself again.

- “Mayakovsky,” Meditations in an Emergency, Frank O’Hara

Um Frank - can you just stop being so true, amazing and insightful. Also that having an amazing way with words so a paragraph sounds like a song and looks like a painting thing - stop that too please. Theres just no hope for the rest of us.

Machotaildrop

This looks both trippy and awesome. I really like most skateboarding movies I've seen including (ahem) one of the best trashy perve-on-cute-boys flicks of all time - Lords of Dogtown - which incedently lead to me and my friend Courtney's short lived (aka never actually was) 90s cover band - Lords of Kurttown (RIP).

Ugliness is in a way superior to beauty because it lasts

Is it just me or has their been a spate of biopics lately? Mostly I don't mind if these films (or even books) are accurate or true as long as they're good. I don't know if this looks that good - but making a movie with anything to do with Serge is a probably good step in the right direction for anyone.

If you haven't seen the Serge and Whitney interview you really should.

you speak to me in words and I look at you with feelings.

Girls can wear jeans, cut their hair short, wear shirts and boots,

I was inspired by this blog post to think about my current style inspirations. Its weird to see them all together - they all look quite the same? In case you couldn't tell I love androgyny though I can never quite pull it off.

1. Jeanne Moreau in Francois Truffaut's Jules et Jim

2. Patti Smith (especially in a Keith Richards t-shirt)

3. Diane Keaton in any Woody Allen film

4. Clotilde Hesme in Philippe Garrel's Les amants réguliers

5. Lou Dillon

6. Another anonymous Sartorialist girl

Philip-Lorca diCorcia

Been meaning to post these for ages! These are some of my favourite photos of all time particularly the fridge one. I couldn't find any good quotes about fridges - if anyone knows any feel free to mail me!

PS i like the story about how they lit the fridge from within with like a lamp or something. kinda genius!

HBO can do no wrong

I am basing most of my endorsement of this show on Steve Buscemi being in it

(via Flavorpill)

"So would you believe me anyway?"

Sometimes writing something concise like 6 words short is infinitely harder to do than to write something 600 words long. This is why in high school people kept banging on about 'Jesus wept.' being the best and most beautiful sentence ever written. This is why in Whit Stillman's 'Last Days of Disco' Chloe Sevigny's character Alice thinks that writing a really great quote is better than writing a great novel. Hemingway once said that his best work was the following:'For sale: baby shoes, never worn.'

Six words, untold possibilities. Theres something about the compact and the concise that resonates with us instantly. Perhaps this is why twitter is so popular?

Anyway I'm going to try and write my 6 word memoir before I die - but before you have the pleasure enjoy some greater writers attempts. They're pretty funny - especially James Frey who is now, I believe, one of the most underrated writers of our generation - thanks Oprah!

Best Movies You've Never Seen #1

Ginger Snaps (2000) - dir. John Fawcett

teen werewolves and the best young goth since beetlejuice. after premiering at toronto film fest this film seemed to go nowhere - though they made 2 sequels which i can't vouch for - but the original reminded me of well, teen wolf meets heathers? To quote - "I get this ache... And I, I thought it was for sex, but it's to tear everything to fucking pieces."the final scene is actually incredibly beautiful and touching as well.
