The genius of 'Pitchfork Reviews Reviews'

19 hours after its release, jesse eisenberg still hasn’t heard My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy

anyway so then a few minutes later, jesse eisenberg’s handlers clear a path for him to go take a picture with the DJ and i catch him near the DJ booth and i go up to him and say “so have you listened to My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy yet?” because i feel like i should do some coverage of that record given the title of this blog obviously and he
smiles at me but then looks nervous and says he hasn’t listened to it and i say “well do you like Kanye West?” and he thinks about the question and goes “wait why are you asking me this?” and i say “i write a tumblr about music” and he thinks about this and wrings his hands, which is something i do a lot, and if he was just some other kid who was here reporting on a celebrity gala, and not a movie star, i might have made conversation with him and compared nervous habits like hand-wringing and constant hair adjustments, but he is a movie star in a rush so i don’t, and then he says something to indicate that he doesn’t want to tell me if he likes Kanye West, and then he says “i’m not… i’m not a voice in the music industry”

I've spent the last few days listening to nothing but Kanye West's My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy and tell you the truth I feel a bit like I've also been tripping. I'm WestWhelmed and/or WestedOut. So as part of a little MBDTF-detox heres a funny review review - to remind me not to take West and his masterpeice - or its Pitchfork 10.0 - too seriously.

She works hard for the money

LESSONS LEARNED - The life of a working girl may not always be glamorous but it is greatly improved by the presence of Cary Grant and/or James Stewart.

Dear Future Husband

Jonah Lehrer
Aziz Ansari

Mark Ronson

Salon's Men on Top 2010: Sexiest Men of 2010 is half loser-snoozer (2 of the guys with their shirts off/open, whose names rhyme with Tussel Whammed, are over 60 or work for Obama and aren't Jon Favreau) and half totally spot on with regards to guys-that-I-would-like-to-dream-date-in-2010. In particular I would like to combine the above Top 3 into some sort've Super-Ultimate-Boyfriend - can you IMAGINE?!

PS I would totally like to add Jonathan Franzen to this list - mainly because his eyesight is worse than mine.

She came from Greece she had a thirst for knowledge,

So did ya hear that Pulp are reforming? In case you doubt my Pulp devotion - please take note I stayed up till 2am on Sunday night watching this doco on 'Common People' on YouTube and have listened to the song on repeat since then. Love!

AMAZE NOTE - He tries to track down the girl from Greece and explains the dance sequence in the video - true.

Reasons to Survive November

November like a train wreck –
as if a locomotive made of cold
had hurtled out of Canada
and crashed into a million trees,
flaming the leaves, setting the woods on fire.

The sky is a thick, cold gauze –
but there’s a soup special at the Waffle House downtown,
and the Jack Parsons show is up at the museum,
full of luminous red barns.

– Or maybe I’ll visit beautiful Donna,
the kickboxing queen from Santa Fe,
and roll around in her foldout bed.

I know there are some people out there
who think I am supposed to end up
in a room by myself

with a gun and a bottle full of hate,
a locked door and my slack mouth open
like a disconnected phone.

But I hate those people back
from the core of my donkey soul
and the hatred makes me strong
and my survival is their failure,

and my happiness would kill them
so I shove joy like a knife
into my own heart over and over

and I force myself toward pleasure,
and I love this November life
where I run like a train
deeper and deeper
into the land of my enemies.

- Tony Hoagland

So November has pretty much blown in its usual subtle and generally sucky way and is once again my least favourite month of the year - to be closely followed by December as per usual. Tony Hoagland gets where I'm coming from on this though. Thanks Tony.

I Jon Lovitz This

30 Rock. In Depression-era New York City, a General Electric executive (Alec Baldwin) attempts to change the life of a female radio writer (Tina Fey) for the better. What happens when business and show business collide? Directed by Frank Capra and featuring hilarious supporting performances by stage star Jane Krakowski and vaudeville comics Tracy Morgan and Jack McBrayer, 30 Rock is a charming screwball comedy for the ages.

Playing favourites

Love Streams is my favourite John Cassavetes film.

Play it Again Sam is my favourite Woody Allen film.

Vivre Sa Vie is my favourite Jean Luc Godard film.

Surviving Desire is my favourite Hal Hartley film.

Metropolitan is my favourite Whit Stillman film.

I love all these directors and nearly all of their films - OK not really so into later Godard (post-1970 blues) because my attention span is not the Grand Canyon and my patience is not the Nile - but if I really had to pick these are my favourite of the favourites. Love you guys - don't go changing.

Get on My Wall

I'm getting a bad addiction to movie posters. I really want the Badlands one most of all.

In which Bicycle Thieves destroyed my hope for the future.

I made a rule a little while ago (well actually 6 years ago) that I would avoid watching devastating or upsetting movies as it just affected me too damn much - hence why I have never seen Dancer in the Dark or Boys Don't Cry. True I made this rule when I was a lot more neurotic and prone to being a downer - but it seems that being less of a downer now and more of stress head hasn't helped my anxiety when it comes to bleak and brilliant movies.

See EXHIBIT A - Bicycle Thieves. The hard part is sometimes I don't know whats going to mow me down into an emotional wreckage. Will it be Au Hazard Balthazar or Breaking the Waves? Apparently not it will be (goddamn) Bicycle Thieves. I haven't been this devastated by a movie since I was 12 and saw Vertigo for the first and only time - all I can really remember is being all wide eyed and whispering to my mother "you can't trust anyone ever" - thanks Mr Hitchcock for DESTROYING MY CHILDHOOD!

OK so perhaps I should have known better than to watch Bicycle Thieves on a Tues night after Gossip Girl when I'm in the middle of a Saturn Return Crisis (AKA trying to catch up on 10 years of stuff I haven't achieved - must read Tolstoy, move overseas and have 3 careers ASAP etc) and work is sucky busy and stressful. However the biggest mistake I think I made in watching this film is at the 1 hour mark (which was at 11pm on this unexpectedly traumatic Tues night) is thinking that director Vittorio De Sica would offer me some respite from the unrelenting bleakness of this movie towards the end - WRONG!

Now I'm even more hesitant than usual to watch films with children. I mean look at this kids face! I nearly started crying just looking at this expression again!

The restaurant scene killed me the most - the looks this kid gives literally pierces some buried childhood trauma spot right in my BRAIN! Also I feel like this is why I could never EVER have babies or puppies - if I ever saw this look IRL I would literally crumble into lame overly sentimental dust!

OK this clipe from Hilarious just made me feel a bit better - if Louis CK can deal with kids and make it funny maybe the world is an OK place - maybe.

Even though I'm sure I will grow to love or at least appreciate this movie as much as I now love/appreciate Vertigo I still feel that movies like this should come with a warning that says "may cause long term psychological damage" or at least "do not watch before bed after Gossip Girl on a Tues night".

1. Get enough food to eat,

and eat it.

2. Find a place to sleep where it is quiet,
and sleep there.

3. Reduce intellectual and emotional noise
until you arrive at the silence of yourself,

From the desk of Julie Klausner

7. Emo Guys Who Have Crushes on Pam from “The Office”

I get it, fellas. She’s not intimidating, like one of those women who wears make-up and styles her hair, and has a good job that she enjoys, and confidence, and a..what do you call it…an adult woman’s sexuality. There’s nothing scary there, because there’s no mystery: she’s just like you! Mousy and shy. And one day your fantasy will come true. You’ll meet a nerdy, cute girl just like that (like you), and NOBODY BUT YOU WILL KNOW SHE’S PRETTY! Shhh! It’s a secret! And she’ll melt when she sees your record collection, and she’ll swoon when you play her the song you wrote, and she’ll never want to go out to a party where you’ll be forced to talk to people of social status, or comb your hair, or buy grown-up shoes, or demonstrate a hearty handshake, or make eye contact, or basically act like a man. You know what? If you want to date somebody just like you, here’s a novel idea: be gay. At a certain point, there’s a lot more dignity to actually taking it in the ass.

I'm currently reading Julie Klausner's book 'I don't care about you're band..' and this is my favourite part so far.
